Why You Need a Helium Canister for Balloons

Helium Canister: The Secret to Effortless Balloon Displays

Helium is the ultimate choice when it comes to creating floating displays for party balloons, birthdays, and large-scale events. A dedicated helium canister ensures you can inflate balloons quickly, safely, and with minimal effort. Whether you’re preparing 30 balloons for a birthday bash or hundreds for a wedding, having the right amount of helium gas on hand is essential.

In this article, we cover everything you need to know about using a helium canister—from choosing between disposable and refillable options, to understanding the science behind helium’s unique properties, and how to store leftover gas safely. Read on for tips, facts, and a buyer’s guide for your next event.

What Is Helium and Why Is It Used in Balloons?

Understanding Helium: The Science Behind the Float

Helium is an inert gas found on the periodic table with the symbol He. As the second most abundant element in the universe, it’s lighter than air and completely unreactive. This makes it perfect for inflating balloons as it rises naturally and doesn’t react with other substances.

Besides its use in decorative balloon displays, helium is also used in MRI scanners, NMR spectrometers, and even in the Large Hadron Collider. But for party planners and parents, the key benefit is simple: helium is used to fill balloons so they float and create that magical effect we all know and love.

What Types of Balloons Can I Use with Helium?

Latex vs Foil Balloons: What Works Best with Helium Gas?

When choosing balloons to use with a helium canister, your two main options are latex balloons and foil balloons. Latex balloons are flexible, affordable, and widely used for birthday parties and smaller events. However, they are porous and typically float for just 6–8 hours unless you use hi-float treatments.

Foil balloons, on the other hand, hold helium for much longer—sometimes several days—thanks to their non-porous material. These are ideal for custom messages, shapes, or 30 balloons spelling out names or event themes.

How Much Helium Do I Need?

Helium Cylinder Sizes and Balloon Counts Explained

Choosing the right helium canister depends on how many balloons you need to fill. A small disposable canister typically fills up to 30 standard 9-inch balloons, while our larger refillable 20L helium tank can handle up to 150 balloons or more.

If you're planning to inflate a mix of latex and foil balloons, consider balloon size and temperature, which both affect gas volume usage. For example, larger foil balloons might require 2–3 times more helium gas than standard latex ones.

Should I Use a Refillable or Disposable Helium Canister?

Disposable vs Refillable: Which Helium Canister Is Right for You?

For one-time use events like birthdays, a small helium tank for 25 balloons is ideal. They’re compact, easy to use, and available for quick delivery. However, if you're a regular event organiser or business, a refillable helium cylinder offers better long-term value and convenience.

Not only do refillables reduce waste, but they’re also part of our eco-friendly gas refill programme. You simply return the empty gas cylinder and receive a full one. It’s that easy.

Helium Canisters and Cylinders: Sizes, Balloon Counts and How to Choose

A helium canister is a pre-filled cylinder of helium gas used to inflate balloons for parties, weddings and events. Bottle Gases supplies disposable helium canisters that fill 10, 25, 30 or 40 nine-inch latex balloons, plus refillable helium tanks in 2 L, 9.4 L and 20 L sizes. Every one is rent-free with nationwide delivery and no cylinder rental.

Helium canister and tank balloon counts compared

Match the canister to how many balloons you need. Our disposable canisters state an exact balloon count on the label, while the refillable tanks hold more gas and are sized by volume.

ProductBalloons (9-inch latex)TypeBest for
Small disposable canisterAbout 10DisposableA few balloon bunches, small gatherings
Medium disposable canisterAbout 25DisposableBirthday parties, small events
Helium canister for 30 balloonsAbout 30DisposableLarger birthday parties, table displays
Large disposable canisterAbout 40DisposableBigger parties and balloon arches
2 L refillable helium tankAbout 30 to 50RefillableRegular use at home, refill and reuse
9.4 L refillable helium tank100+RefillableWeddings and large events
20 L refillable helium tank100+ (largest capacity)RefillableVery large events and trade use

Counts assume standard 9-inch latex balloons. Larger balloons, foil balloons and colder weather all use more helium, so allow a little extra when you plan.

Disposable vs refillable helium canisters

Disposable helium canisters are single-use and ready to go straight out of the box, which makes them ideal for a one-off party where you already know roughly how many balloons you need. Once empty they are not refilled: the steel canister is recyclable, so depressurise it fully and put it out with your metal recycling. Refillable helium tanks in 2 L, 9.4 L and 20 L cost more up front, but you own the cylinder outright, there is no rental and no contract, and you simply order a refill when it runs low. For anyone inflating balloons regularly, a refillable helium tank works out far cheaper per balloon. Whichever you choose, every canister and tank we sell is rent-free with no standing charges.

Pure helium vs balloon-gas grade

Our refillable helium tanks are filled with pure helium, while the disposable balloon canisters use balloon-gas grade helium, which is blended to the purity needed for reliable balloon lift. Both float 9-inch latex balloons well, so for everyday party use the practical difference is volume rather than lift. If you specifically need pure helium, for larger displays or professional work, choose one of the refillable tanks.

Rent-free helium, delivered nationwide

You can buy a helium canister or a large helium tank here for delivery across the UK, with no rental, no cylinder deposit and no queueing at a depot. If you are planning a wedding or a big party, our helium gas for events guide covers balloon-count planning, hire versus buy, and how to dispose of empty tanks responsibly.

Then the question arises: where’s the content? Not there yet? That’s not so bad, there’s dummy copy to the rescue. But worse, what if the fish doesn’t fit in the can, the foot’s to big for the boot? Or to small? To short sentences, to many headings, images too large for the proposed design, or too small, or they fit in but it looks iffy for reasons.

A client that’s unhappy for a reason is a problem, a client that’s unhappy though he or her can’t quite put a finger on it is worse. Chances are there wasn’t collaboration, communication, and checkpoints, there wasn’t a process agreed upon or specified with the granularity required. It’s content strategy gone awry right from the start. If that’s what you think how bout the other way around? How can you evaluate content without design? No typography, no colors, no layout, no styles, all those things that convey the important signals that go beyond the mere textual, hierarchies of information, weight, emphasis, oblique stresses, priorities, all those subtle cues that also have visual and emotional appeal to the reader.
