Helium gas canisters for parties, weddings and events
Helium has dozens of industrial uses, but at home there's really only one — balloons. Whether you're decorating for a birthday, dressing a wedding venue, running a florist's repeat-order route or fitting out an arch for a corporate launch, the canister you need depends on balloon count and balloon size.
Small disposable canisters hold around 250 litres of helium — enough for roughly 30 × 9-inch latex balloons — and need no deposit or return logistics. Larger refillable cylinders hold up to 20L of gas and fill 150+ balloons, with no environmental charge, no bottle rental, and a fully refundable deposit on return at any point. Latex balloons typically float for 6–8 hours; foil balloons hold helium for 3–5 days. Inflate as close to the event as possible for best appearance. Helium must never be inhaled — store canisters upright, away from heat, with the valve closed.
Helium questions
Common questions from first-time party shoppers and trade helium buyers — tap to expand.
How many balloons does a canister fill?
A small disposable canister holds roughly 250 litres of helium — enough for about 17 nine-inch latex balloons or 12 eleven-inch latex balloons. A large canister holds around 420 litres, filling roughly 30 × 9-inch or 20 × 11-inch latex. The canister product page lists the exact fill count for that SKU.
How long do helium balloons float?
9-inch latex balloons float for around 8–12 hours; 11-inch latex for 10–14 hours; 18-inch foil balloons typically last 3–5 days. Inflate latex balloons close to the event for best results.
Is it safe to inhale helium?
No — never inhale helium. It displaces oxygen and can cause sudden loss of consciousness or fatal injury. Use helium only for inflating balloons. Keep canisters upright, away from heat, and out of children's reach.
Disposable or refillable canister?
For a one-off birthday or wedding, a disposable canister is the simpler choice — no deposit, no cylinder return. If you run an events business or florist with regular helium use, a refillable cylinder works out cheaper per balloon. Speak to us about the right option if you order more than one canister a month.
